Project scope

This was another steel fabrication project for one of our regular clients from Guildford, Surrey.

We worked closely alongside the client on this one to understand the entirety of the project and the exact requirements. We had a very limited amount of drawings, so we offered to produce a Tekla packed with 3D drawings. This way we could make sure we were both on the same page.

The client signed these off, so we moved to steel fabrication.

We received the steel delivery right to out yard the very next day, so we could get the ball rolling to meet the delivery date for the customer.

We took the steel to the saw by fork truck placed on rollers for cutting. Our sawman marked the steel to length, cut to size, and placed on fabricators’ bench for further steel fabrication.

One of the steel fabricators then made a start fabricating the steels to the Tekla drawing produced by drafting team.

Once fabricated, it then goes over to our spray booth to have the relevant coating applied. In this case, it was out 30min fire rated grey. Fire rated intumescent paint is the most commonly used coating to protect steel against fire and acts as an insulator, forming a solid char in response to heat. Intumescent paint can be applied on steel as a thin or a thick film coating. Intumescent fireproof paint forms a thin top layer that prevents deformation and damage to the surface of fabricated steel. The painted coating swells under the influence of high temperatures, expanding many times, turning into a reliable thermal barrier.

Steel Delivery and Installation

Once checked off by a quality control manager, the steel is then loaded onto one of our Hiab lorries by the fork truck, ready to be delivered to site and lifted into position by one of our operators.

Steel installation is a very important process and we control it every step of the way. First off, we’re making sure the foundations are safe, stable, and ready for erection. Then we lift and place steel sections into position, aligning them correctly. Finally, we bolt everything into place.
