Steel fabrication process step by step

A new client needed structural steel for a building a new large residence in Milton Keynes. They placed an order, so we produced the drawings ready for the manufacturing, as per the clients’ specifications.

The architect specified the type of steel, so we bought the exact steel type from our trusted steel supplier. After that, we transported it for laser cutting. Our experienced steel fabrication team checked off the steel beams off against the cutting list and then sawn them to the precise lengths. It’s important to do this before the actual fabrication process starts to ensure that all of the connection details are correct and accurate to the specifications.

Next, our coded fabricators undertook all steel fabrication exactly to the confirmed drawings. We fabricated all steels for the project in a timely fashion, in order to not hold up or delay the project. After that, our in-house QA team checked the fabrication to ensure accuracy. It’s important to make sure that holes, plates and fabrication specifications line up perfectly according to the engineer’s specifications.

Thereafter, we completed blasting and painting process. We painted the steels using the correct thickness of paint in microns and then hung them in the yard to dry. In this case it was zinc phosphate primer for most of the steels. Besides, we added galvanisation to a few of the steels that would be more accessible to the elements and therefore required an extra layer of protection.

Once we completed all this, then we added bolts, steel to steel fixings, nuts and washers to finalise the job. Last but not least, it was ready for loading and delivery!

The steel was then loaded on to our 30-metre hiab with our driver checking the loads, ready for another 5am start. Then we delivered it to the site and completed the installation for the client as well.

The site was a mud bath due to very heavy rain over the weekend before the installation was scheduled to begin. However, this did not deter us! Despite adding another challenge, the project was completed on schedule.

This project was completed in two phases; the ground floor was done in 4 days, and then we then returned a week later to install the top floor steels for the project. The top floor took just another 2 and half days to be completed!

Another job well done for all involved – and a very happy client!
