What Your Steel Erector Wants You to Know
Steel erection can look deceptively simple from the ground. A crane lifts a beam, someone guides it into place, a few bolts go in and suddenly you’ve got a building taking shape.
In reality, a smooth steel installation depends on a lot of planning before that first lift. So, from the point of view of the people actually putting the steel together, here are a few things worth knowing.
Start with the Site Access
A steel beam doesn’t become easier to move just because it’s reached the site.
The erection team needs a practical route from the delivery vehicle to the lifting area, and that route needs to accommodate both the steel and the equipment being used to move it. Narrow entrances, uneven ground, parked vehicles, scaffolding and other site equipment can quickly turn a straightforward delivery into a logistical puzzle.
And it isn’t just about getting the lorry through the gate. There needs to be enough room to unload, manoeuvre and position the steel safely.
A few minutes spent thinking about access before the delivery can save a lot of time when the lorry actually arrives.
Give the Crane Some Thought
“There’s room for the crane” and “there’s a suitable crane position” aren’t necessarily the same thing.
The erection team needs to know where the crane can safely set up, what it needs to reach and how the lifting operation will work across the site. Ground conditions, overhead obstructions and the position of the structure all matter.
The crane also needs to work with the planned erection sequence. If it has to be moved repeatedly because the lifting plan wasn’t considered properly, installation becomes slower and more complicated.
Make Steel Easy to Reach
Once a delivery arrives, it’s tempting to put the steel wherever there’s a spare bit of space.
The problem is that the steel will eventually need to be moved again, and preferably without having to shift half the site first.
Where possible, components should be stored somewhere accessible and in an order that makes sense for installation. If the first beam needed for the erection sequence is buried underneath everything else, the team has a problem before they’ve even started.
Keep Everyone Working from the Latest Drawings
Nobody wants to spend half a morning trying to work out which way a beam was supposed to go.
Clear, up-to-date drawings give the erection team the information they need to understand the structure, connections and installation sequence. If drawings have changed, the latest versions need to reach everyone working with the steel.
And if something doesn’t make sense, it’s much better to ask before the beam is in the air.
Resolve What You Can Before Site
Some things inevitably need to be dealt with on site. Existing buildings aren’t always as predictable as drawings suggest, and the reality of construction can throw up surprises.
But there is a big difference between adapting to an unexpected condition and relying on the site team to solve something that could have been planned beforehand.
Steel is fabricated to specific dimensions for a reason. If a connection, opening or beam position needs to change, it may require input from the structural engineer or design team rather than a quick adjustment with a grinder.
The more that can be resolved before the steel arrives, the smoother the installation is likely to be.
Plan the Erection Sequence
Steelwork needs to go together in a particular order. Columns, beams, bracing and connections all have to work together as the structure develops.
That means the erection team needs to think beyond the individual beam they’re lifting. What comes next? Is the next component accessible? Is temporary stability being maintained? Does another trade need to complete something before the next stage can happen?
A well-planned sequence keeps the work moving. A poorly planned one can mean waiting around, moving steel twice or bringing equipment back onto site.
It All Starts Before the First Lift
The best steel installations rarely feel complicated. The delivery arrives, the crane is ready, the right components are accessible and everyone knows what they’re doing.
That’s not luck. It’s the result of planning between the fabricator, erector, contractor and wider construction team.
So if there’s one thing a steel erector would probably like every builder to know, it’s this: the smoother the preparation, the easier the steelwork becomes on site.
