How we deliver structural steel through narrow London streets

Delivering structural steel across London is rarely straightforward. Between narrow residential roads, parked vehicles, restricted access, and busy traffic conditions, getting steel safely to site takes far more than simply loading a lorry and setting off.

At MAH Steel, logistics planning is a major part of every project. From loft conversions in terraced streets to larger commercial developments in central London, we work closely with contractors and site teams to ensure steel arrives safely, efficiently, and on schedule.

Every Delivery Starts With Planning

No two London sites are the same. Access can vary dramatically from one street to the next, particularly in older residential areas where roads were never designed for modern construction traffic.

Before fabrication is even complete, we assess:

  • Site access restrictions
  • Road widths and turning space
  • Parking limitations
  • Delivery time windows
  • Crane positioning requirements
  • Local traffic conditions
  • Safe unloading areas

By identifying challenges early, we can coordinate deliveries that minimise disruption and avoid unnecessary delays on site.

Crane-Assisted Steel Delivery Across London and Kent

We provide crane-assisted steel delivery and lifting across Kent and London, operating from our Gravesend base. Our lorry-mounted cranes (HIABs) are designed to deliver and position steel safely, even on tight or restricted-access sites.

With lifting reach up to 30 metres, our fleet is capable of positioning steel over buildings, into rear gardens, and onto rooftops – ideal for projects where standard delivery methods are not practical. Depending on the site requirements, we operate 15m, 22m, and 30m reach HIABs to suit different access conditions and lifting requirements.

We currently achieve a 98% on-time delivery rate, helping contractors keep projects moving and reducing costly delays on site.

Working Around London’s Tight Residential Streets

A large proportion of structural steel installations in London take place within residential areas. House extensions, loft conversions, and internal structural alterations often involve properties located on narrow streets with limited access for heavy vehicles.

In many cases, careful timing is essential. Early morning delivery slots may be planned to avoid congestion, while vehicle sizes are selected based on available access space.

Communication between our drivers, site managers, and installation teams is key throughout the process. Deliveries are coordinated to ensure steel can be unloaded safely and efficiently without causing unnecessary disruption to neighbouring properties or traffic flow.

Coordinating Crane Lifts and Steel Installation

For many projects, delivery is only one part of the challenge. Structural steel often needs to be lifted directly into position using cranes or specialist lifting equipment.

This requires close coordination between multiple teams, including fabricators, site managers, crane operators, steel erectors, and structural engineers.

Accurate scheduling helps ensure steel arrives in the correct sequence for installation, reducing downtime on site and allowing projects to move forward efficiently.

Supporting Construction Projects Across London and Kent

At MAH Steel, we support residential, commercial, and industrial projects with fabricated structural steel, dependable delivery scheduling, and coordinated installation support.

From tight terraced streets in London to larger developments across Kent and the South East, every delivery is approached with careful planning, practical site experience, and the right lifting equipment for the job.
