Universal beams (UB)
Steel I-sections for floors, openings, loft conversions, extensions and structural steelwork. Often referred to as RSJs in domestic enquiries, these are supplied to the exact section specified by your structural engineer.
Competitive prices. In-house fabrication. Our own delivery fleet. We supply structural steel beams and RSJs, including universal beams (UBs), to your specification and work around the deadlines your site depends on.

Whether you need a single steel beam for an extension or a complete structural steel package, MAH Steel supplies and fabricates steel to your engineer’s specifications. From universal beams (UBs) to cut, drilled and plated sections, we prepare steel ready for delivery to site.
RSJ (rolled steel joist) is a traditional term still widely used for steel beams, particularly on domestic projects. Modern structural drawings normally identify a specific section, such as a universal beam (UB), and we work to that specification.
Already have your beam sizes or structural engineer’s drawings? Send them over and we’ll confirm pricing, availability and delivery options.
Send your drawings and we take it from there.
Beam sizes or engineer’s drawings, lengths and quantities, any drilling, plates or finish, and your delivery postcode.
We review what you send and confirm price and availability. The section, grade and loading stay the engineer’s specification.
Beams are cut to length and, where needed, drilled, plated, welded or finished to the approved drawings.
Our own fleet delivers, with HIAB lifting planned around access, loads and your programme.
From universal beams (UBs) to fabricated structural steel members, we supply and prepare the steel sections specified for your project. Need a particular size? Send your requirements and we’ll confirm a price and availability.
Steel I-sections for floors, openings, loft conversions, extensions and structural steelwork. Often referred to as RSJs in domestic enquiries, these are supplied to the exact section specified by your structural engineer.
UC sections for columns, frames and structural support. Supplied as specified, with base plates, cap plates, drilling or other approved fabrication details where required.

Need more than a plain length? We can prepare drilled, plated, welded, spliced and cranked beams to the approved workshop and structural drawings.
Steel beams for home projectsIndividual beams for extensions, loft conversions and wall openings.
Structural steel packagesMultiple beams, columns and connections for contractors and developers.
Other sectionsChannels, angles and hollow sections through MAH Steel’s wider product range.
Not sure which section you need? The structural engineer specifies the section and grade. Our team can help turn that approved requirement into a supply and fabrication quotation.
Not every beam is a straight length. These MAH Steel projects show cranked and spliced beams made from drawings, taken through restricted access and lifted into position.
Cranked beamsDrawn in CAD for sign-off, fabricated and craned into position in Sidcup.
Spliced beamsOne beam spliced into three sections for a basement with limited access.
Drilled, plated, galvanisedA beam drilled to an exact position, with matching plates and clamps, galvanised.
Splices and platesStructural splices and shelving plates made for a roof lift in North London.
Your site doesn’t need another delivery problem. It needs beams that match the drawings and are ready for the next stage of the build.
Our Gravesend workshop handles cutting, drilling, welding and connection work before steel reaches site. We can also discuss on-site welding, steel erection and remedial fabrication when the project requires them.
Prepared lengths and sections to the agreed cutting list.

Welding servicesPrimer and protective finishes appropriate to the job.
Steel finishesSupplying the right beam is one thing. Getting it onto a busy site, down a tight street or over a property is another. MAH Steel’s own fleet gives us more control over how steel arrives, with HIAB lifting planned around access, loads and the programme.
From residential streets to demanding commercial sites, our crane-equipped lorries support planned steel deliveries and offloading.
Restricted road access, long-reach lifting, offloading space and safe positioning are considered for each job.
Our own vehiclesCoordinated steel transport and crane offload
Difficult accessNarrow streets, rear gardens and lifting over buildings
Planning matters: available reach is not the same as lifting capacity at that distance. Vehicle selection, safe lifting, road conditions, site access and delivery dates are confirmed for each enquiry.
Whether you’re ordering one RSJ for a house extension, coordinating a loft conversion or sourcing a larger structural package, we understand the pressures around site access, specifications, cost and deadlines.
Most buyers will have a UB designation on their engineer’s drawing. Use these common UK examples as a reference, then send us the exact section, grade, length and connection details for pricing. This isn’t a live stock list.

Example nominal UK UB designations; dimensions shown are the designation, not precise rolled dimensions. The engineer specifies the required structural member. Prices, grade, stock and lead time must be confirmed with MAH Steel.

Answers to common questions before ordering a steel beam, RSJ or fabricated steel package.
Yes. MAH Steel handles enquiries for individual steel beams as well as larger structural packages. Send the section designation, required length, quantity and delivery location for a quote.
Yes. Beams can be cut to the required length and, where needed, drilled, welded, plated or finished to the approved drawings before delivery.
The price of an RSJ depends on the section, steel grade, cut length, quantity, any drilling, plating or finish, and delivery or lifting needs, so we price each enquiry individually. Send the section designation from your engineer’s drawing, the length you need and your delivery postcode and we’ll quote for supply, cutting and delivery.
RSJ stands for rolled steel joist and is a familiar term, particularly on domestic projects. Modern engineer’s drawings usually identify a specific universal beam (UB), universal column (UC) or other section. Use the exact designation on the drawing when requesting a price.
The size is set by a structural engineer’s calculations, not by a rule of thumb. It depends on the span, the load above, the steel grade and how the beam is supported. Your engineer or building control will give the exact section, for example 203 × 133 × 25 UB, and we can quote to that.
Yes. We supply and fabricate steel beams for extensions, loft conversions and structural alterations, including connection details to the engineer’s approved specification.
Yes. MAH Steel operates from Gravesend in Kent and delivers steelwork to projects across London and the wider South East using its own vehicles, including crane-equipped HIAB lorries where suitable.
Our fleet includes 15m, 22m and up-to-30m reach HIAB options. We review access, lifting conditions, loading and positioning for each job before confirming whether a crane-assisted delivery is possible.
The section size, grade and loading suitability must be determined or approved by a competent structural engineer. MAH Steel can quote for supply, fabrication and delivery against the approved specification.
Price depends on the section, steel grade, cut length, quantity, fabrication requirements, finish and delivery or lifting needs. Send these details and we’ll price the job.
For a universal beam such as 203 × 133 × 25, the first number is the approximate depth in millimetres, the second the flange width and the third the mass in kilograms per metre. So a 3 metre length weighs roughly 75 kg before any plates or fabrication. The engineer’s drawing gives the designation and grade.
Span depends on the section, steel grade, the load carried and how the beam is supported, so it is set by the structural engineer’s calculations rather than a rule of thumb. If you have the engineer’s drawings we can price the specified section.
That depends on where the beam is used and what the structural engineer or building control specifies. A workshop primer or other finish can be applied where the drawings call for it, and fire protection requirements are set by the engineer.
From a single beam to a complete steel package. Send us your drawings, tell us where it’s going and we’ll talk through supply, fabrication and delivery.
