Steel Welding Innovation Technology

Steel welding is an integral part of what we do at MAH Steel as a steel fabrication company. We do it on a daily basis, so we have a vast experience in this field. Let’s summarise some basic, but important information about types of steel welding.

Steel welding innovation technology has revolutionised the way we build and repair metal structures. The advancements in this field have enabled us to create stronger, lighter, and more durable steel constructions, which has had a profound impact on various industries such as automotive, aerospace, and construction. Here are some of the most significant innovations in steel welding technology recently.  We’ve included latest technologies that we use at MAH Steel, and other welding innovations that are being used throughout the industry and not necessarily at MAH Steel.

Laser beam welding (LBW)

LBW is a precise and efficient method of welding process that uses a high-powered laser beam to melt and join steel together. This technique offers superior web quality, deep penetration and low distortion. Thus makes it ideal for applications that require high levels of accuracy and precision.

Friction stir welding (FSW)

FSW is a solid-state welding process that uses a rotating tool to generate friction between two metal surfaces, causing them to heat up and bond together. This method produces minimal distortion, no porosity, and high-quality welds, making it suitable for a wide range of steel applications.

Gas metal arc welding (gmaw)/MIG

GMAW, also known as MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding, is a versatile arc welding process that uses a continuous wire electrode and an inert gas shield to protect the weld pool from atmospheric gases. This method is widely used in the automotive and construction industries due to its ease of use, speed, and adaptability to various steel alloys.

Flux cored arc welding (FCAW)

FCAW is a variant of GMAW that utilises a special type of wire electrode that contains a flux core. This flux helps to remove impurities and protects the weld pool, resulting in higher quality welds with fewer imperfections.

Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW)

SMAW, also known as “stick” welding, is a manual arc welding process that uses a consumable electrode covered in a flux to protect the weld pool. This method is relatively simple and inexpensive, making it a popular choice for small-scale projects and repair work.

Submerged arc welding (SAW)

SAW is a mechanised welding process that uses an electrical arc to melt and join steel together while submerging the weld area in a granulated flux. This method produces high-quality welds with minimal porosity and is commonly used in heavy industries like shipbuilding, tank construction, and pipeline manufacturing.

Hybrid welding

Hybrid welding combines different welding techniques to achieve optimal results. For example, combining LBW with GMAW or FCAW can produce high-strength, high-quality welds with reduced distortion and improved appearance.

Advanced materials

New generations of high-strength, corrosion-resistant steels have been developed, offering improved properties and expanded application possibilities. These advanced materials, combined with innovative welding techniques, enable the creation of stronger, lighter, and more durable steel structures.

The continued development of steel welding innovation technology will undoubtedly drive progress in various industries, as it enables the creation of stronger, lighter, and more efficient steel structures. As new materials and techniques emerge, we can expect even more exciting advancements in the world of steel welding.
