On-Site Steel Fabrication: How It Works and When It’s Needed
Most structural steel is fabricated in a workshop, where the controlled environment makes it easier to cut, drill, weld and prepare components before they reach the construction site.
But sometimes, things don’t go exactly according to plan. Existing buildings can reveal unexpected conditions, access can be restricted, or a steel component may need to be modified after it has already arrived on site.
That’s where on-site steel fabrication can provide a practical solution. Rather than sending a component back to the workshop or waiting for an entirely new piece to be manufactured, certain fabrication and modification work can be carried out where the steel is being installed.
What is on-site steel fabrication?
On-site steel fabrication is the process of carrying out some structural steel work directly at a construction site rather than completing everything in a workshop. It can involve cutting, drilling, grinding, welding, fitting or modifying steel components to suit the actual conditions on site.
It doesn’t necessarily mean fabricating an entire structure from scratch. In most cases, the majority of the steel will still be prepared in a workshop, with on-site work used for specific modifications, repairs, adjustments or installations.
This can be particularly useful when working on existing buildings. The dimensions or construction details found on site don’t always match the original drawings exactly, and sometimes a component needs to be adjusted once the surrounding structure is visible.
Access can also play a part. Large or awkwardly shaped sections may be difficult to transport into a restricted space, making it more practical to deliver smaller components and complete some of the work on site.
How does the process work?
The first step is to assess the site and understand exactly what needs to be done. Measurements are checked against the relevant drawings and specifications, while the surrounding structure and working conditions are considered before any modification takes place.
Once the requirements are clear, the area can be marked out and the appropriate equipment prepared. Depending on the job, this might involve cutting a section to a different length, drilling additional holes, preparing a connection or fabricating a small component to fit the existing steelwork.
The steel is then modified, fitted and secured according to the approved requirements. This could involve bolting or welding, depending on the design and the type of work being carried out.
The final stage is inspection. Dimensions, connections, welds and the completed installation can be checked against the drawings and specifications to make sure the work has been completed correctly.
Because structural steel forms part of the building’s load-bearing system, on-site modifications shouldn’t simply be improvised. Where a change affects the structural design, it may need to be reviewed and approved by the relevant engineer or design team before work can proceed.
Workshop or on-site fabrication?
Workshop fabrication will normally be the preferred option where possible. A dedicated fabrication facility provides access to specialist machinery, lifting equipment and controlled working conditions, allowing complex steelwork to be manufactured efficiently before delivery.
On-site fabrication has to work around the building itself. Space may be limited, access can be difficult and other trades may be working nearby. Outdoor work can also be affected by weather.
The two approaches therefore work alongside each other. Fabricating as much as possible in the workshop can make installation quicker and more efficient, while the ability to carry out suitable work on site provides flexibility when conditions change.
Why experience matters
On-site steel fabrication requires more than the ability to cut and weld steel. The work has to take account of the existing structure, the approved design, access, lifting, safety and the practical realities of working on a live construction site.
An experienced fabrication team can assess the situation, identify a practical way forward and recognise when a modification needs to be referred back to the structural engineer or design team.
