Potential Issues Before Structural Steel Reaches Site

By the time structural steel arrives on a construction site, a lot of work has already happened behind the scenes. Drawings have been prepared, steel has been ordered, components have been fabricated and everything has been loaded for delivery.

So when something doesn’t quite go to plan on site, the issue may have started much earlier.

Some challenges are unavoidable, particularly when working with existing buildings, but many potential problems can be reduced with careful planning and communication. Here are some of the things worth considering before steel leaves the workshop.

Checking Dimensions and Site Conditions

One potential issue is a difference between the dimensions shown on the drawings and what actually exists on site.

This can be particularly relevant for refurbishment, extension and loft conversion projects, where existing structures aren’t always perfectly aligned with historic drawings. A wall may be slightly out, an opening may be a different size or a previously hidden detail may only become apparent once work starts.

Even a relatively small discrepancy can matter when steel has been fabricated to specific dimensions. Checking critical measurements and confirming site conditions before fabrication can help avoid modifications later.

Planning Site Access

A steel beam might fit perfectly into the design and still be difficult to get onto the site.

Large sections need to travel from the delivery vehicle to the installation area, and that route needs to be considered before the steel is fabricated and delivered. Narrow entrances, restricted roads, low bridges, overhead obstacles and limited unloading space can all create challenges.

It’s worth thinking about the entire journey, not just whether the lorry can reach the address. There needs to be somewhere suitable to unload and a practical way of moving the steel into position.

Keeping Information Clear and Consistent

Structural steel fabrication relies heavily on drawings and specifications. If important information is missing, unclear or inconsistent between different documents, it can create uncertainty during fabrication.

Connection details, dimensions, steel grades, finishes and other requirements all need to be understood before work begins. If something isn’t clear, resolving it before fabrication is much easier than trying to work it out when the steel is already on site.

Good communication between the engineer, architect, contractor and fabricator can prevent a lot of unnecessary back and forth.

Managing Changes During the Project

Construction projects evolve. A wall moves, an opening changes or a design is adjusted after the steelwork has already been detailed.

The challenge comes when those changes don’t make their way to everyone involved.

A late change that affects a beam, column or connection can mean that a component already manufactured to the previous design needs to be altered or replaced. Keeping the fabrication team informed when drawings or specifications change can help prevent this.

Checking for Potential Clashes

Steel doesn’t exist in isolation. It needs to work around walls, floors, roofs, services, windows, doors and all the other components that make up a building.

A clash that isn’t picked up during the design and coordination stage can become a serious problem once the steel arrives. This is one reason why detailed modelling and coordination are so useful. Identifying a potential clash digitally is considerably easier than discovering that two components occupy the same space during installation.

Planning Delivery and Installation

Even when every steel component has been fabricated correctly, the delivery can still cause challenges if the installation sequence hasn’t been considered.

Steel needs to arrive in a practical order, particularly on sites where storage space is limited. If the component needed first is underneath everything else on the lorry, someone is going to have to spend time moving steel around before installation can begin.

The delivery vehicle, unloading arrangements, crane access and erection sequence all need to work together.

Early Checks Can Prevent Later Problems

The good news is that many of these potential issues aren’t particularly complicated to prevent. They often come down to checking measurements, coordinating drawings, considering access and keeping everyone informed when something changes.

Once steel has been cut, drilled, welded, finished and delivered to site, resolving an issue becomes considerably more difficult.

That’s why the work that happens before the steel reaches site matters so much. A few extra checks during the planning and fabrication stages can save considerable time, disruption and cost during installation.
