Remedial steelwork: what it is and how MAH Steel gets it right

Not every construction project goes to plan. Sometimes steelwork has already been installed when problems come to light – maybe a measurement is off, a weld isn’t up to standard, or the wrong grade of steel has been used. That’s where remedial steelwork comes in.

At MAH Steel, we specialise not only in fabricating new steel but also in stepping in when existing work needs fixing, adjusting, or replacing. Based in Kent and trusted across London, Surrey, Sussex and Essex, we’ve helped countless builders and contractors get projects back on track quickly and cost-effectively.

What exactly is remedial steelwork?

Remedial steelwork is the process of correcting or strengthening steel that has already been fabricated or installed. It can include anything from replacing incorrectly cut beams, reinforcing welds, or modifying steel sections that don’t fit as they should. Sometimes the issue is the fault of poor initial fabrication, other times it’s due to site conditions changing mid-project.

Whatever the reason, leaving the problem unresolved isn’t an option. Steel is structural – it carries the load of a building – so even small errors can have big consequences. That’s why our team treats remedial work with the same level of precision and quality control as we do with brand new steel fabrication.

How we do it step by step

The first stage is always understanding the issue properly. Our team will usually visit the site, inspect the existing steelwork, and take detailed measurements to identify what needs to be corrected. We’ll talk to your site manager or architect to make sure we fully understand the scope of the problem.

From there, we design the best solution. Sometimes that means fabricating a completely new section, other times it’s a case of modifying what’s already in place or adding reinforcement. Whatever the approach, our in-house team ensures the plan is both safe and cost-effective.

Once everything is agreed, fabrication takes place in our Kent workshop. As CE-accredited fabricators, we make sure every new or replacement piece meets the highest standards. For urgent jobs, we can also carry out cutting, drilling, or welding directly on site to get the problem sorted quickly.

When it’s time for delivery, we coordinate with your schedule to minimise disruption and keep the build moving. Installation is handled with care, and before we leave site, we carry out final checks to make sure the steelwork is safe, secure, and compliant.
