Steel beams for a rear extension and loft conversion in Havering, craned over the house

Project overview

A customer in Havering, East London needed a set of fabricated steel beams for a rear extension and loft conversion.

How we did it

Fabrication

After discussing the project in detail and finalising the fabrication drawings, we selected the steel from our stock, checked every beam against the cutting list and cut it to length. In the fabrication area the team double-checked the lengths, and the beams were fabricated to the approved drawings. After each stage, cutting, welding and drilling, our in-house quality control team reviewed the work to make sure every plate, hole and weld met the engineer's specification.

Finish and delivery

The steel was blasted and painted with zinc phosphate primer to the correct thickness in microns, then left to dry in the yard. We loaded it onto our 30-metre Hiab lorry, and our driver headed to site for a 5am delivery. The steels were craned over the house and into place as planned.

Outcome

• Steels craned over the house and into the loft, and the beams fitted, in the customer's words, "like a glove"
