Project scope

We received a very specific request by way of the drawing below to create a bespoke cranked steel.

This was to overcome an unexpected problem on site so our customer had to come up with a plan which he needed us to carry out to mm perfection. The steel had to fit inside existing steel that was already in place. We had 1mm tolerance, otherwise it just wouldn’t work.

We sent this sketch to our drawing team so they can get the plan underway. Once they have drawn the steel, we sent this to our customer for approval. When we got the approval from our client, our drawing team issued drawings for steel fabrication.

Our cutting and saw operators checked the cutting list and cut steels to the required measurements and angles. This is where the precision cutting comes in. If it’s not mm perfect it won’t work.

Once the material has been cut, it’s then transported by fork lift to the steel fabrication area. Our experienced team of fabricators start the project and take the plan to the next stage. Once the fabricator has checked the cut steel is correct, they will then fabricate it to exact detail. The smallest variation from detail means it just won’t go to plan.

Finishing touches

Once the project has been manufactured, it is then checked again to make sure everything is as it should be. It is taken to our paint shop to be painted. Then we check it for the paint’s thickness and lay out in the yard ready for the next stage.

Once again, it’s checked by the loading team that all steel is correct to the delivery notes. After that, we load the steel onto one of our fleet vehicles and deliver to site exactly where our customer needs it.

On this occasion our customer was installing the steel himself, so the final part of the plan was over to them. Only once he had done that would we know if the plan worked.

In the end, our customer sent us the pictures below to show us just how well the plan went. He said “Love it when a plan comes together!”
