Project Overview
MAH Steel was appointed to manufacture and supply the structural steelwork for a residential loft conversion in Surrey. The project was designed to create additional living accommodation within the existing roof space, requiring a series of structural steel beams to support the new floor, roof alterations, and load-bearing walls. Our team fabricated each steel section to the structural engineer's specifications before arranging delivery using our 30m HIAB crane. The extended reach of the crane allowed the steelwork to be lifted directly into the roof space, reducing the need for manual handling and helping the installation team begin work immediately. Throughout the project, we worked closely with both the building contractor and the structural engineer to ensure every beam was manufactured accurately and delivered in line with the agreed construction schedule. Careful coordination helped keep the programme on track while ensuring the structural steel integrated seamlessly with the existing property.The Challenge
The property was located on a residential street in Surrey where access around the building was restricted and traditional crane access would have been difficult. The structural steel also needed to be installed at roof level, requiring a safe and efficient lifting solution that minimised disruption to neighbouring properties. In addition, the loft conversion programme had limited flexibility, meaning the steelwork had to be fabricated accurately and delivered on the planned installation date. Precise coordination between fabrication, transport and lifting operations was essential to avoid delays on site.
Our Approach
Design & Planning
Our team carefully reviewed the structural engineer's drawings to confirm beam sizes, connection details and installation requirements before producing detailed fabrication drawings for manufacture. Every steel component was produced to the required tolerances to ensure a straightforward installation within the existing roof structure.
Fabrication
Working with the customer, we assessed site access and developed a delivery plan that maximised the capabilities of our 30m HIAB crane. By scheduling delivery to coincide with the installation programme, the crane was able to lift each beam directly into position at roof level, significantly reducing handling time and improving overall site efficiency.

This proactive planning approach helped streamline the installation process, minimise disruption on site and ensure the loft conversion progressed according to schedule.
