Steel beams for a small rear extension in Chigwell, lifted over the house

Project overview

A Chigwell homeowner contacted us with plans for a small rear extension and needed a set of structural steel beams to support new elements of the build. After discussing the requirements over the phone, our sales team quickly drafted a sketch. Once the customer approved it, it became the basis for the fabrication drawings.

Fabrication

We selected the steel sections from our stock, verified the material specification and took the beams to our cutting area, where they were checked against the cutting list and cut to length. In the fabrication workshop the lengths were checked against the drawings, then the steel was fabricated, welded to the engineer's specification and drilled for bolts, plates and steel-to-steel connections. Our in-house quality assurance team checked alignment, weld quality, spacing and overall compliance with the drawings.

Finish and delivery

The steels were primed with zinc phosphate to the specified thickness and hung in our yard to cure. After a final quality assurance inspection, we added bolts, fixings, washers and packing plates and loaded the beams onto our 30-metre Hiab lorry. Our driver checked the load and left at 5am for Chigwell, where he used the Hiab to lift the beams directly over the back of the house and place them where the customer needed them.
