Project scope

As a steel fabricator located in Kent, we love local projects located literally next door. This particular one took place in Sittingbourne, and our steel workshop is based in Gravesend, Kent – how convenient!

A new job from a new customer!

This was a completely new customer. First, they asked us to provide drawings for approval. Our drawing office took the dimensions from the customer, and we then produced several revisions. We then produced the final drawings and then proceeded with the following.

Some of the fabricated steel was in stock and some needed to be ordered, which is usually next day delivery. We were then able to process the job speedily.

The steel was prepared for cutting and fabrication, marked with the finish and the type of fabrication required.

Our brilliant team of steel fabricators cut the steel to length, then moved to our fabrication area, where it was checked by the fabrication team manager to ensure that the steels were the correct cut length before the fabrication process began.

All steel was then prepared for fabrication, cleaned up and put through our stringent checks, then the various fabricated plates were tack welded into place by the fabricator. This was then passed to the steel welding team.

After we completed the steel fabrication, it was checked by our in-house QA team. They then gave feedback to the fabricator on this job.

When the fabrication was completed, then welding and drilling was then checked again by the in-house QA team to ensure that holes, plates and fabrication specifications were adhered to and that they lined up as required. Next is shot blasting and painting!

Prior to loading, the painted fabricated steel was checked by the QA and loading teams, that all steel was correct to the instruction, then they added all steel to steel fixings, bolts, nuts and washers and packing plates to complete the job.

Finishing touches

Shot blasting is a resurfacing process used to remove debris and irregularities from concrete, metal, and other industrial surfaces. It is a surface treatment technique that makes use of particulate grains propelled under high velocity. This process is a highly effective solution for removing contamination on metal substrates or changing the coarseness or smoothness of a surface before coating.

Whilst similar with sand blasting, shot blasting employs centrifugal force from a mechanical device to propel treatment media upon the product. The sand blasting process uses compressed air to shoot some form of abrasive media like sand against the product being treated.

So, after all, the steel was then loaded on to our 15 metre hiab lorry, as it was an offload to floor. Before setting off, the driver checked the load ready for an early start and then it was delivered to site and placed where the customer needed it. In this case, on their yard floor!
