A new customer from Hertford needed structural steel for a small extension. After discussing requirements with our sales team, they placed an order, and we produced a steel drawing ready to be manufactured. Then we agreed a delivery date with the new client.  

We chose the appropriate steel from our large stock and transported for cutting. Then we checked off the steels against the cutting list and then sawn to the precise lengths.  

Steel fabrication in Hertford

Fabrication was the next stage! Before starting the fabrication process, we moved the steels to the fabrication area, where the fabrication team checked them to ensure the steels had been cut at the correct length. 

Our coded steel fabricators undertook all fabrication exactly to the confirmed drawings.

Then our in-house QA team checked the fabricated steel to ensure accuracy to the requirement. 

After that, our welders fully welded the steels to specification. Next, they drilled holes in the steel beams. Lastly, our QA team checked the steel again to ensure that they adhered holes, plates and fabrication specifications to the engineer specification and that they line up perfectly as required.

Then we started the blasting and painting process. We painted the steels using the correct thickness of paint in microns and then hung in the yard to dry. In this case we used zinc phosphate primer. Zinc phosphate primer is a corrosion-resistant steel coating we apply to steel surfaces to protect against rust and enhance paint adhesion. In steel fabrication, fabricators commonly use it as a pre-treatment layer on structural steel components, ensuring long-term durability and protection in various environmental conditions.

More QA checking! checked by the QA and loading teams, they ensure that all steels were fabricated correctly to the specific instructions. Once this is completed then bolts, steel to steel fixings, nuts and washers and packing plates (if required) were added to finally complete the job, ready for loading and delivery. 

The steel was then loaded on to our 30 metre HIAB lorry with our driver checking the loads, ready for another 5am start. Finally, it was delivered to site and placed where the customer needed it, right over the back of the house.
