Steel supplied and installed for a new residential build in Milton Keynes, in two phases

Project overview

A new client needed structural steel for a large new residence in Milton Keynes. We produced the drawings for manufacture to their specification, and the architect specified the type of steel, so we bought exactly that.

How we did it

Fabrication

The steel was cut to length against the cutting list and fabricated to the confirmed drawings. Our in-house team checked the fabrication, including that the holes and plates lined up to the engineer's specification. The steels were blasted and painted with zinc phosphate primer, and a few of the steels that would be more exposed to the weather were galvanised instead. Bolts, fixings, nuts and washers were added before loading.

Delivery and installation

The steel was loaded onto our 30-metre Hiab lorry for a 5am start, delivered to site and installed by our team. The ground floor steel took four days to install; we returned a week later for the top floor, which took two and a half days.

Outcome

• Completed on schedule despite the muddy site
• Ground floor installed in four days; top floor in two and a half days
