Steel Used
Steel Used:
UC and UB sections including 152 and 203 UC columns, 152/203/254 UB beams, 100 x 100 SHS, flat-bar bracing, connection plates and base plates
Delivery Approach
Delivery Approach:
Steelwork was delivered to site using our 22m HIAB crane lorry, driven and operated by Dan. The HIAB lifted the larger fabricated assemblies from the vehicle and positioned the steel ready for erection, reducing handling within the restricted site area.
Complexity Level
Complexity Level:
High – a substantial multi-bay steel frame with pitched roof sections, bracing, cranked and fabricated roof members and numerous beam-to-column connections. The steelwork also had to be coordinated closely with existing brickwork, roof lines and the surveyed site geometry.

Project Overview

MAH Steel was appointed to detail, fabricate, deliver and install the structural steel frame for a project in Ashford, Kent TN25. The structure incorporated multiple column and beam grids, pitched roof steelwork, braced bays and a series of fabricated connection details across an irregular footprint. The objective was to produce a fully coordinated steel package that fitted the surveyed site conditions and could be erected efficiently alongside the existing buildings and boundary walls.

The Challenge

The main challenge was coordinating the new steel frame with the existing site geometry and working within a restricted construction area surrounded by existing brickwork and buildings. Survey information and the developing steel model required careful checking of roof junctions, apex connections and member geometry before fabrication. The site photographs also show open foundation excavations and limited working space, making delivery, lifting and erection sequencing particularly important.

Our Approach

Design & Planning

George from our drawing office developed the steelwork in Tekla using the engineer’s information together with the site survey. The 3D model allowed key roof and apex connections to be checked in detail before fabrication, including the geometry of the pitched members and bolted connection plates. General arrangement and fabrication drawings were then coordinated and revised to suit the measured site conditions before the steel was released to the workshop.

Fabrication

Following approval, Martin fabricated the columns, beams, roof members, bracing and connection components in the MAH Steel workshop. The frame used a combination of UC, UB and SHS sections together with flat-bar bracing, base plates and fabricated bolted/welded connections. More complex roof junctions were produced from detailed workshop drawings, with member angles, plates and hole positions checked against the Tekla model before dispatch.

Delivery & Installation

The installation was managed on site by John Baker and carried out by the MAH Steel erection team. Dan delivered and lifted the steel using our 22m HIAB crane lorry, including fabricated roof assemblies, while a Manitou MAN’GO 12 articulated boom lift provided high-level access for bolting and alignment. The frame was erected progressively from the columns and perimeter members through to bracing and the pitched roof steelwork, with the lifting sequence planned around the restricted access and ongoing groundworks.

Outcome

  • Complete structural steel package delivered from site survey and Tekla detailing through to fabrication and installation.
  • Steel frame coordinated to suit the measured site geometry, existing brickwork and roof lines.
  • Complex pitched roof and apex connections detailed in 3D before fabrication.
  • Fabrication completed by Martin in the MAH Steel workshop.
  • 22m HIAB delivery and lifting carried out by Dan.
  • Manitou MAN’GO 12 articulated boom lift used for safe high-level installation access.
  • On-site erection managed by John Baker through to completion of the main steel frame.

“ MAH Steel did a great job from start to finish. The steelwork was well planned and fabricated, and the installation team worked efficiently to get a fairly complex frame erected on site. Communication throughout was excellent and the whole team, from the drawing office through to delivery and installation, were professional and easy to work with. Very pleased with the finished result and would happily use MAH Steel again. ”
